Coast Guard ends search for missing Md. fisherman

WASHINGTON — The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing fisherman, lost near White Point Beach in St. Mary’s County over the weekend.

Rescuers searched 279 nautical miles for Roger Grissom, 52, of Hughesville, Maryland before ending the search.

Maryland Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Candy Thomson said Grissom was taking part in a fishing tournament with three other men when their boat capsized in the Potomac River on Saturday.

Thomson said when the calm and sunny weather turned cold and windy, the men encountered 5- to 7-foot high whitecaps. The men initially signaled for help about 5 p.m. Saturday when their boat began taking on water.

One of the fisherman survived the ordeal; Jason Downing, 39, of Mechanicsville, was found about 6:30 a.m. Sunday on top of the overturned boat. More than two hours later, the bodies of boat owner Gregory Moore, 55, of Mechanicsville, and William Edelen Jr., 48, of White Plains, were recovered, the Coast Guard said.
