High winds knock out power to thousands in DC region

WASHINGTON — Thousands are in the dark once again as heavy winds blow through the area.

Pepco reports nearly 1,000 customers are without power in Montgomery County, Maryland due to high winds. The utility company’s website says power should be restored by 4 p.m.

High winds have also left more than 4,000 Dominion Power customers without power, mostly in Fairfax County, Virginia. The utility’s website says power should be back on between 4 and 9 p.m.

Wintery weather on Saturday wreaked havoc throughout the D.C. region, causing deadly pileups on the road and leaving hundreds in the dark.

Though temperatures were warmer and roads were in better condition on Sunday, high winds remained a problem.

The National Weather Service said strong wind gusts moved across the D.C. region between 1:45 and 2:15 p.m., bringing in gusts up to 45 mph. and a 10 degree temperature drop.

Downed power lines shut down a portion of Defense Highway for about an hour in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, according to police.

Twenty two people were rescued from the Severn River in Maryland after strong wind gusts blew over their sailboats.

In a separate incident, three others were rescued from the Potomac River near Wilson Bridge after several sailboats were overturned. A spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS couldn’t confirm that the incident was related to the wind but said the incident happened at around the same time as the major wind gusts.
