2-year-old child dies after being hit by car in Capitol Heights

WASHINGTON —  A  2-year-old child is dead after being hit by a vehicle Saturday night in Capitol Heights. Police say the child had been attending a gathering with family in the neighborhood that evening.

The accident happened just after 8 p.m.  at the 1400 block of Early Oaks Lane in Chapel Oaks. According to Prince George’s County spokesman Michael Owen, a car driven by someone leaving the party had struck the child, who had wandered into the street, unbeknownst the driver. Once the driver, who has not been identified, realized he or she struck something, he or she got out to investigate and immediate attempted life-saving efforts on the child.

“They transported the child to the hospital.  At this point, it appears to be a tragic accident, but it is still very early on in the investigation and we’re looking at all of the circumstances of the accident,” Owen told WTOP. The toddler died at the hospital.

“As you can imagine, the family is very distraught,” he added. “I’m sure you can imagine,  they just lost a child.”
