The Greatest Game I’ve Ever Seen

WASHINGTON — We’re introducing a new feature here on the sports page, in which we dig deep into our collective sports memory banks in search of the most exciting, spectacular, memorable contests we’ve ever witnessed. This will be an ongoing series with single submissions from different members of the WTOP staff, both within the sports department and outside of it.

This isn’t simply a catalog of the best moments in Washington sports history. There can be only one Game 4 on the 2012 NLDS, only one final game at RFK. These are about the unforgettable personal moments, the ones we still bring up at parties or tell our kids about years later.

High school swim meets? Totally game. A college wrestling match? Sure. A professional bull fighting match? Anything works, with one caveat: You had to be there. But anything works, as long as it left you with that indelible feeling we’ve all experienced before, knowing that it was the greatest game you’d ever seen.

As we progress, we may look to expand outside the newsroom. Regardless of how many entries we run, this will serve as the home page. Read our first entry below and check back in each week as we add new stories from different perspectives.
