WASHINGTON — A Fairfax County school bus and a police cruiser collided in the Springfield area Thursday, sending several people to the hospital.

A Fairfax County school bus and a Fairfax County police cruiser crashed near the intersection of Backlick Road and Floyd Avenue at about 12:45 p.m., says Sgt. Roger Henriquez with Fairfax County police.

Emergency crews transported two students on the bus and one chaperone to Inova Fairfax Hospital with minor injuries, says Fairfax County Police Officer Tawny Wright.

A preliminary investigation shows the bus pulled in front of the officer’s cruiser on Floyd Avenue from Backlick Road, Wright says. The crash occurred at an intersection commonly used by school buses, she adds.

The bus was on its way to Mark Twain Middle School from a field trip at Lake Accotink with students and chaperones onboard, says Fairfax County Public Schools Spokesman John Torre. There were 47 people on the bus, including the driver, Torre says.

Also, Torre says he is not yet sure if the bus had a camera on it.

Alternate transportation took the students and chaperones back to the school.

The officer was a on patrol and heading to a larceny call at the time of the crash. The call was not an emergency, Wright says.

The crash closed the intersection for during the afternoon for police investigation and cleanup. It reopened at about 3:45 p.m.
