Reston couple in critical condition after being pulled from burning house

RESTON, Va. — A couple is in critical condition after being pulled unconscious from the second floor of their burning townhouse Tuesday morning.

Fairfax County Fire Chief Richard Bowers says firefighters were called to the house at 1210 Purple Sage Court, in the Fairfax section of Reston, between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

When they got there, Bowers says, they were confronted with heavy fire conditions on the first floor.

Neighbor James Moran says firefighters had to break the second-floor window to rescue the couple, both in their 20s, who were asleep upstairs when the fire started.

“They pulled them out of the second floor window,” Moran says.

Fire officials say the couple’s two dogs and two cats died but a bird did survive.

The fire chief says the couple was taken to Reston Hospital Center, but were then flown to MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s burn unit.

The fire department is still investigating how the fire started.
