Washington Monument closed Sunday, elevator problems ensue

WASHINGTON — The Washington Monument is closed Sunday due to an elevator problem.

The elevator experienced an interruption of service this morning at the 490-feet level, according to a statement from the National Park Service. There was a park service employee on board but the door was able to be opened and the employee was able to get out. Some 50 visitors were walked down the steps from the observation level.

Saturday the elevator broke down around 9:30 p.m. trapping three employees. Twenty-five people were able to take the stairs.
