WASHINGTON – Police have arrested a man in the stabbing death of a woman in Glover Park, D.C. police say.

Charles Elvis Sykes, 59, of Northwest, D.C. was charged with second-degree murder while armed, according to police.

The woman was found stabbed to death in a large apartment building in the Glover Park area of Northwest D.C. early Friday, and the police are calling it a domestic-related homicide.

Police were called to the 4000 Tunlaw building, on Tunlaw Road, at 6:09 a.m. Friday for a report of a suspicious package. When they got there, they stopped a man who was leaving, which led them to an apartment where they found the woman, unconscious and suffering from stab wounds.

She was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police say, and her identity has not been released.

The building was evacuated, but residents were allowed back in after police found nothing else suspicious.

“Everyone thought it was just a fire in the building, so people weren’t as nervous,” said Cindy Cisneros, who lives in the building. “We only knew something was really wrong when a bunch of police showed up [and] special forces units showed up; and then it started to get a little bit unnerving.”

WTOP’s John Aaron and Mike Stankiewicz contributed to this report.
