Police investigate three D.C. shootings in one day

WASHINGTON — D.C. police are investigating three separate fatal shootings following a violent Tuesday afternoon across the city.

The first shooting happened outside St. Luke Roman Catholic Church along East Capitol Street in Southeast at about 12:30 p.m. Amari Jenkins, 21, was shot multiple times and died as a result of his injuries.

Just before 4 p.m. police say, a woman and two boys were shot in an apartment building in Southeast following a confrontation between the two boys.  Police Chief Cathy Lanier says a 17-year-old boy was in a dispute with his 12-year-old neighbor when he went to the younger boy’s apartment with a gun.  Lanier says shots were fired; both boys were wounded, along with the 12-year-old’s mother, Tenika Fontanelle, 31, who died of her injuries.

One of the boys admitted to the hospital in that case has been arrested and charged with first degree murder for the death of Fontanelle, police say.

About an hour after the apartment shooting, D.C. police responded to the 2700 block of 17th Street in Northeast to find the body of a man who had been shot.  The victim has been identified as William Conley, 24.

Like many U.S. cities, the District of Columbia has seen an increase in homicides and nonfatal shootings. There have been 97 homicides so far this year, a 35 percent increase over this point in 2014.

The D.C. police say that anyone who reports an illegal gun being hidden in the community is eligible for a $1,000 reward. You can call your tip in anonymously at 202-727-9099.
