Fulbright recipient ID’d as second person dead in Dupont Circle fire

WASHINGTON — Both people killed in a Wednesday morning row home fire in Dupont Circle have been identified.

On Thursday night, the Metropolitan Police Department identified Michael Patrick McLoughlin, 24, as one of those killed. No other information about McLoughlin was given.

In a news release Friday afternoon, Georgetown University identified Nina Brekelmans, who had just graduated with a master’s degree, as the other person who died in the June 3 fire.

Five others were also injured.

According to the school, Brekelmans graduated May 15 with a Master of Arts in Arab studies. She was especially interested in women’s issues and had just been awarded a Fulbright to research the experiences of female distance runners in Jordan.

Brekelmans was also involved with running groups, Georgetwon Women in International Affairs, Georgetown’s Muslim Chaplaincy and the Jordan Health Aid Society in Irbid, Jordan.

In the release, James Reardon-Anderson, interim dean of the Walsh School of Foreign Service, says grief counselors are available.

The fire occurred early in the morning of June 3 on the 1600 block of Riggs Place in Northwest Washington. Five others were injured in the fire, including three firefighters. Two people had serious injuries.

The Metropolitan Police Department says the fire isn’t suspicious but is still under investigation.
