Three children burned in boat explosion in Calvert County

WASHINGTON — Three children were burned–two of them severely–in a boat explosion in Calvert County on Saturday.

The incident occurred near Lusby, Maryland at around 11:30 a.m. Two adults and three children had set off in a 20-foot pleasure boat from a private pier near Lusby.

“About 100 yards from shore there was an explosion and fire,” says Candy Thomson a spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police.

The children, all girls, are ages 9, 8 and 3. “Two [of the girls] had severe burns. One child had less severe injuries,” Thomson says.

The adults aboard were not hurt. Thomson says the  girls’ mother accompanied them as they were airlifted to National Children’s Medical Center in D.C. The 3-year-old is in critical but stable condition. The 8-year-old is expected to be released tonight. The 9-year-old is suffering from 1st and 2nd-degree burns.

The state fire marshal’s office is assisting Maryland Natural Resources Police have enlisted in the investigation.
