A look at careers with the highest projected employment growth

When evaluating the future of America’s job market, there are two distinct approaches to take. The optimist could point to a steadily declining unemployment rate — currently sitting under 6 percent — as a reassuring sign of things to come.

But others note that many people have simply given up looking for work, which makes the job market a little cloudier. Even more concerning are predictions like those from computational engineering professor Moshe Vardi of Rice University, who believes the national unemployment rate could skyrocket to 50 percent over the next 30 years as a result of robots replacing human workers. This might sound a tad extreme, but it’s best to err on the side of caution and keep an eye on your automated vacuum cleaner for the time being.

With this in mind, CareerTrends looked for jobs the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects to be headed in the right direction. Using the most recent data from the BLS and the Foreign Labor Certification Data Center, we found the 27 careers with the highest projected increase in employment percentage by 2024.

For this list, we used BLS employment projections and only took into consideration careers with at least 10,000 employees and an average annual salary of $35,000 or higher. Occupations are ranked according to their projected employment increase. In the event of ties, the career with the highest current employment was ranked higher.

Jobs in healthcare and information management appear to be on the rise, so soon-to-be job seekers might be wise to consider such careers to help ensure long-term job security.
