Airport parking and ridesharing app can save big bucks

WASHINGTON – Sometimes getting a free ride to and from an airport can be difficult. Parking the car overnight or for days in the airport’s parking spaces can get very costly.

Taking taxis or shuttles directly from home can cost travelers upwards of $100, depending on from where they are coming.

SpotHero is another online application in a growing trend of “sharing” to save money, in this case, tracking cheap parking spaces near airports.

“In most cases, in most airports, it is less expensive and more cost-effective to drive and park,” said  Matt Sullivan, New England and mid-Atlantic general manager for SpotHero.

The app is simple: Clink a link to an airport and it will show the user a list of available parking options, typically in nearby hotels that offer a shuttle to the airport.

For example, clicking through Dulles International Airport, there are five hotels offering spaces, all within six miles of the airport. All have shuttles with drive times to the airport of about seven to 11 minutes, with prices as low as $6 a day.

In comparison, long-term parking at the airport is $17 a day. But for $10 and a short shuttle ride, there is an economy parking nearby,

SpotHero isn’t the only site that shows travelers where the best parking is, though it does offer cool charts on how much users can expect to save.
