Woman dies after assault outside Alexandria convenience store

WASHINGTON — A woman died Thursday after police say she was assaulted outside an Alexandria convenience store earlier this month.

On July 10, 39-year-old Fedelia Montiel Benitiez was assaulted by a man as she left a convenience store in the 4900 block of Seminary Road shortly before midnight, Alexandria police said. Authorities responded to the area to find Benitiez unconscious and lying on the ground outside the building.

Benitiez, an Alexandria resident, was transported to hospital that night, but died Thursday as a result of her injuries. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide.

On July 11, police arrested 26-year-old Robert Coleman. The Alexandria man was charged with malicious wounding. Police say additional charges may be pending.

Police have not released any additional details about the case at the time, including if there was a motive for the assault.

This case marks Alexandria’s third homicide in 2017.

Police are asking anyone with additional information about the case to contact them at 703-746-6751.
