Large crowds at BWI prompt security concerns

WASHINGTON — A major section of Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is being shut down periodically due to long lines that prompted security concerns.

“I think this was proactive on the airport’s behalf,” says BWI spokesperson Whitney Kidd.

“We’re trying to make getting through security as easy as possible.”

According to a statement from the Transportation Security Administration, crowds around the Concourse B checkpoint are usually large and confusing during peak times.

Lines that form at the Southwest Airlines ticketing counters create a bottleneck and spill over into the line for security.

Due to the congestion, the Concourse B security checkpoint will be closed during busy morning hours.

Passengers will instead be directed to the Concourse C security checkpoint.

This is a temporary fix. The TSA says it is working “with the airport and airline to seek other solutions.”

Kidd says the change has not negatively impacted wait times.
