WASHINGTON – Virginia State Police say a 68-year-old motorcyclist was killed Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run crash involving a tractor-trailer on northbound Interstate 95 before the Fairfax County Parkway.
The crash occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Police say Timothy Halpin apparently lost control of his 2001 BMW motorcycle while driving in the left lane of I-95.
Police say the motorcycle slid onto the highway’s left shoulder while Halpin slid into the center northbound lane and was hit by a tractor-trailer.
Halpin, of Dumfries, Va., died at the scene. Police say the tractor-trailer did not stop after the collision and the driver may not have known the motorcyclist had been hit.
Police say witnesses were not able to give a description of the tractor-trailer, and are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 703-803-0026.
Authorities say it was raining when the crash occurred, and alcohol was not a factor.
The crash forced the closure of all of the main lanes of I-95 northbound and diverted traffic at Lorton. The lanes reopened around 6:45 a.m.
