Cumberbatch in talks to star in Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

WASHINGTON — Marvel Studios may have found its Sorcerer Supreme.

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch is in talks to play Doctor Strange in Marvel’s upcoming superhero movie, Variety reports.

If the deal is confirmed, Cumberbatch will play Stephen Vincent Strange, neurosurgeon-turned-Master-of-the-Mystic-Arts. Marvel fans have clamored for “Doctor Strange” casting details since it was teased in previous films, including “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

Cumberbatch was eyed for the role after negotiations with Joaquin Phoenix fell through. The deal depends on Cumberbatch’s schedule, including the BBC “Sherlock” series, Variety reports.

An official release date for the film has not yet been announced, but it will be directed by Scott Derrickson, known for his work on “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” “Sinister” and “Deliver Us From Evil.”
