WASHINGTON – It’s that time of year again. With summer comes warm weather, green grass and plenty of outdoor movies. Make sure to pack blankets, chairs and some bug spray, just in case.
On the National Mall, cowboys, heiresses and serial killers come together at this year’s Screen on the Green. The projectors light up Monday, July 16 for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Three more screenings will follow.
This year’s schedule and location have been changed to accommodate ongoing construction. Movies start at sunset and will be shown on a giant 20-foot by 40- foot screen between 7th and 12th streets Northwest.

- July 30 – “From Here to Eternity”
- Aug. 6 – “Psycho”
Also in D.C. is the NoMa Summer Screen, which kicked off May 23. This festival features food trucks and music before screenings, so make sure to arrive early with cash in hand for food and drinks. And since the world is supposed to end this year – according to the Mayans, anyway – the theme is appropriately the end of days:
- June 13 – “Shaun of the Dead”
- June 20 – “Wall-E”
- June 27 – “Ghostbusters”
- July 4 – “Independence Day”
- July 11 – “Red Dawn”
- July 18 – “War Games”
- July 25 – “The Incredibles”

If you live in Virginia, head to the 2012 Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival where “Every Night is Election Night.” Politically themed movies will be shown every Friday from June through September at Gateway Park near the Key Bridge.

Love is in the air at Crystal City’s outdoor movie series, with romantic comedies dominating the screen at 1850 S. Bell Street. These run every Monday through August 27 starting at sunset:

- June 25 – “Hitch”
- July 2 – “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”

Bethesda residents will have to wait a bit longer. The lineup for the five-night movies series has not been announced. Check the website for updates.
