We knew the longstanding La Madeleine at Mid-Pike Plaza would be returning in the new Pike & Rose development.

On Thursday, Federal Realty and the restaurant announced where and roughly when.

The county French cafe will reopen its restaurant and bakery in the ground-level retail portion of the PerSei, the first apartment building to be delivered in the massive project that’s bringing mixed-use to Mid-Pike.

The original Mid-Pike La Madeleine closed on Jan. 19 because of the upcoming demolition of that section of the property. It will open back up in the PerSei when the building’s finished this fall.

“After nearly two decades of operation, we were fortunate to serve a loyal following of local residents and businesspeople in the Rockville and White Flint area. We look forward to welcoming those loyal guests back to the new café and also hope to introduce our brand to new guests at Pike & Rose,” said La Madeleine’s Susan Dederen in a press release. “The new neighborhood will offer a dynamic environment for La Madeleine. Fortunately, the gap between our closing and the beginning of a new La Madeleine era in Rockville will be relatively brief.”

The restaurant opened in 1994, about three months after the downtown Bethesda location became the chain’s first in the D.C. area.

Something we did not know: The water wheel feature in the original restaurant actually worked. It was intended to grind grains into flour for the restaurant’s bread.

Joining La Madeleine in the ground floor of PerSei will be Summer House, from the Lettuce Entertain You restaurant group and a yet-to-be-named beer garden concept from the Neighborhood Restaurant Group.
