Police make arrest in August Exxon killing

WASHINGTON — Anne Arundel County Police have arrested a suspect in the August killing of an Exxon gas station worker.

On October 25, police announced the capture of Robin Tyrone Smith Jr., who was taken into custody the night before and detained at the Jennifer Road Detention Center without bail.

Police say the worker — Rajinder Kumar, of Glen Burnie — was killed during a robbery. On August 7, police received a 911 call from an Exxon customer, who found Kumar injured and suffering from gunshot wounds.

Surveillance video showed a man entering the Exxon and confronting the clerk at 1 a.m. In the clip, the man shot Kumar, took an undetermined amount of cash from behind the counter and ran from the Exxon.

Smith is charged with first- and second-degree murder, manslaughter and armed robbery.

The investigation is ongoing. Those with information should call Det. Jack Hartzell at 410-222-3460 or the Tip Line at 410-222-4700.
