Proposed FBI HQ in Md. raises traffic concerns

GREENBELT, Md. — Residents in Greenbelt raised concerns about traffic and wetlands as they attended a public meeting about the proposal to relocate the FBI there.

The General Services Administration has completed two of four public meetings in connection with its search for the location of a new FBI headquarters.

“We are getting the public to tell us what their concerns are,” says Bill Dowd, GSA project manager.

“We will analyze those issues and come back to the public again, probably in the spring.”

In the coming years, the FBI will move out of its current location along Pennsylvania Avenue in D.C.

The GSA is considering potential sites for a new headquarters in Greenbelt, Maryland, Landover, Maryland and Springfield, Virginia.

Residents in Springfield attended a meeting on Monday.

Tuesday it was Greenbelt’s turn.

One of the major concerns raised during Tuesday’s session was traffic congestion that would come with the thousands of new workers in the area.

“We realize that bringing more employees to any site brings traffic, so that needs to be evaluated,” Dowd says.

Next week, residents in D.C. and Landover will have their chance to ask questions and voice concerns during public meetings.

The D.C. meeting will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Oct. 1 at the District Architecture Center, Hickok Cole Room, located at 421 7th St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20004.

The Landover meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex, Town Hall, located at 8001 Sheriff Rd., Landover, Md. 20785.
