Former Naval Academy dairy farm to be organic

GAMBRILLS, Md. (AP) — Anne Arundel County officials say the current tenants of the former Naval Academy dairy farm will resume organic operation of the property.

County Executive Laura Neuman said Tuesday that the county will award a 5-year-old lease on the Gambrills farm to Maryland Sunrise Farm, which is owned by Edwin and Marian Fry.

Neuman said the tenants had said over the winter that they wanted to stop organic farming. But after offering a new lease, only the Frys and one other person submitted bids.

The county controls the 600-acre farm under a 30-year lease with the U.S. Navy, which used the farm to provide milk products for the Naval Academy.

The lease, if approved by the County Council and the Navy, takes effect on Jan. 1.
