Md. woman found guilty in U.S. Senate candidate’s death

WASHINGTON – The woman charged with hitting and dragging U.S. Senate candidate Natasha Pettigrew to her death in September 2010 has been found guilty.

Christy Litteford, 43, was found guilty on multiple charges for hitting and killing Natasha Pettigrew in Upper Marlboro. Pettigrew, the Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate, was on her bike when she was hit on Route 202.

Police say Littleford drove four miles after hitting Pettigrew with her SUV. Littleford said she didn’t stop because she thought she hit a deer or a dog. She called police when she got home.

The jury in Prince George’s County, Md., came back Thursday evening with guilty verdicts on all but one count. Littleford was found guilty of: Failure to remain at the scene of an accident that resulted in bodily harm; failure to remain at the scene of an accident that resulted in death; failure to render assistance and negligent driving.

She was found not guilty of failure to control her speed to avoid a collision, according to John Erzen II in the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s office.

Littleford is scheduled to be sentenced in August and could face up to ten years in prison.
