Fisher House: Offering support to veterans and their families

Saturday - 10/19/2013, 7:26am  ET

WASHINGTON - When the government shutdown threatened death benefits due to family of service members killed in action, a private foundation stepped in to help: Fisher House.

The group offers myriad services to military members, including getting parents and spouses of wounded warriors to hospitals and rehab facilities.

The Fisher House Foundation helps injured service members connect with any family member they'd like to have with them.

"That family now gets airline tickets from us, they get a free place to stay," says Vice President for Community Relations and Media Affairs Cindy Campbell. "The only thing they have to think about - the only worry that they have is being by the bedside of that loved one to help him or her recover."

There are 63 Fisher Houses nationwide near Veterans Affairs hospitals and military hospitals where family members can stay while visiting loved ones. The foundation's goal is to have comfort houses near every U.S. military hospital.

To help accomplish its mission The Fisher House Foundation gladly welcomes volunteers and donations of money, cars, hotel points or frequent flyer miles.
