17 years later, police still pursuing leads in murder of Alicia Showalter Reynolds

CULPEPER, Va. – The Virginia State Police says it is continuing to investigate a 1996 homicide in Culpeper County.

Saturday marks the 17th anniversary since the disappearance of Alicia Showalter Reynolds.

Reynolds, 25, of Baltimore, vanished along U.S. Route 29 in Culpeper, Va., in 1995.

She was traveling from Baltimore to Charlottesville, Va. The graduate student’s remains were found two months later off Route 3 in Lignum.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office has received more than 10,040 tips relating to the case.

More than two dozen tips have come in within the past year and officials are encouraging the public to come forward with any information related to the investigation.

Witnesses told police they saw a white man between 35 and 45 driving a dark-colored pickup truck, possibly a green Nissan, parked along the shoulder of Route 29 along with Reynolds’ car.

They described him as between 5-foot-10 and 6 feet tall with light- to medium-brown hair.

After Reynolds disappeared, at least two dozen women came forward with stories of a man either stopping their cars or trying to stop them along Route 29.

Police are asking anyone with information about her abduction and murder to contact the Virginia State Police at 1-800-572-2260 or 1-888-300-0156. Tips can be emailed to police at bci- culpeper@vsp.virginia.gov.
