D.C. region home to 6 of nation’s 10 richest counties

WASHINGTON – Six of the 10 wealthiest counties in the country are located in the D.C. region, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

The Washington Examiner reports Loudoun County is still the richest county in the nation with a 2011 median household income of $119,525. Fairfax County comes in at third with a $105,409 median household income, and Howard County is two spots lower with an income of roughly $99,000.

Rounding out the list for the region is Arlington County at No. 6, Prince William County at No. 9 and Montgomery County at No. 10.

The Examiner says the government presence in the area is one factor that contributes to the region’s affluence. Stephen Fuller, director of the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University, says households where more than one resident brings in a high salary also play a role.
