Ouch! Gas prices up by double digits

WASHINGTON – That painful feeling at the pump just got a lot sharper. Prices are up all across the region by double digits.

The latest WTOP Pain in the Gas Survey shows the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.78, up 13 cents from last week.

Gas prices a year ago this week were lower. On Aug. 11, 2011, WTOP’s Pain in the Gas Survey showed the price of a gallon of regular at $3.76.

This week, midgrade gasoline rose 3 cents, to $3.87. Premium also is up 13 cents, to $4.10 a gallon. A year ago, premium was $4.07. Diesel saw some relief. Prices dropped 11 cents to $3.95 a gallon. A year ago, diesel averaged $4.06.

Regular unleaded this week is cheapest again in Virginia, at $3.66 a gallon. It’s $3.72 in Maryland and $3.97 in the District. Prices rose the most in D.C., up 16 cents a gallon. In Maryland, they went up 14 cents. In Virginia, they increased 10 cents.

Last year, WTOP found the average for regular fuel cheapest in Maryland, at $3.70. The Virginia average was $3.71, and in the District it averaged $3.87.
