Wednesday - 5/16/2012, 1:17am  ET

WASHINGTON - Kenyan McDuffie has won a special election Tuesday night in D.C. and will replace former Ward 5 councilmember Harry Thomas Jr., who was convicted of stealing $350,000 from taxpayers earlier this month.

McDuffie will serve out the remainder of Thomas Jr.'s term, which ends in 2014. He won't be sworn in and take office until the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics certifies the results. The board is scheduled to certify the results on May 30.

Unofficial results with all precincts reporting had Kenyan McDuffie, a Democrat, winning with 4,085 votes; Delano Hunter, a Democrat, placed second with 1,850 votes.

There were 12 candidates on the ballot in Tuesday's special election.
