WASHINGTON – While the countdown is on to The Hunger Games hitting the big screen on March 23rd, there’s hunger at our libraries.
“Its definitely hot, hot, hot,” says DauVeen Walker, head of Children’s and Youth Services at the P.D. Brown Memorial Library in Waldorf, MD.
She says the waiting list for the trilogy, The Hunger Games is long all across Charles, Calvert and St. Mary’s Counties.
Walker says books, ebooks, and books on CD are all out.
WTOP checked around the region and found the same thing. At the Germantown library, we were told 366 people were already waiting for the books Tuesday afternoon. An Alexandria library is prepared with about 16 copies but all are borrowed with a short waiting list.
Walker says dystopian literature is hot right now and the book’s theme is very appealing to young people and to teens.
She sees some similarities with the trilogy and society today. “We have reality shows, we have shows that have different types of competition,” she adds.
The novels go even further where young people fight to their death. Walker says the books are violent and dark in parts and doesn’t recommend them for children younger than 14.
But she expects the book’s popularity to soar for quite a while with teens and their parents. “It’s exciting. It’s an exciting book,” she says.
