WASHINGTON — It’s a trend that you might find surprising, but baby boomers are making a comeback on the ski slopes.
“You know it’s one of those surprise statistics that you wouldn’t think,” says Mark Glickman, vice president of marketing and sales at Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia.
He says he’s seeing it at his resort. Glickman says ski schools are seeing people 45 and older taking snowboarding lessons.
Glickman says recent statistics from the National Ski Area Association show an 11 percent increase in skiing and snowbaording for people 45 and older. And on the other end, he says, there’s been a decrease for skiers 35 and younger.
But on the slopes you still see a lot of young kids out there, so you wouldn’t think that’s the trend. Obviously, he says the best time to learn is when you’re young. But apparently, the boomers are getting out there and enjoying the great outdoors.
Now some snow is needed. Far Western Maryland and parts of West Virginia will be under a winter storm warning from 1 a.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Tuesday. Accumulations of 8- to 14 inches are expected.
