WASHINGTON – A famed military jet is being restored and placed at a local museum.

Inside NoVA reports the first Marine jet to respond to the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the Pentagon will be permanently retired and placed at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va.

Inside NoVA says the aircraft has been on display since 2004 at Quantico Marine Base at The Basic School. The school is where newly commissioned Marine Corps members learn to become officers.

Museum aviation curator Ben Kristy says the jet is being restored before it becomes part of the Phase II galleries at the facility. Construction of the museum’s new wing begins in 2015.

Kristy says the jet should make its debut by 2018.
