WASHINGTON – The 2013 Virginia gubernatorial race remains very close with the election eight months away.

The poll from the University of Mary Washington Center for Leadership and Media Studies finds the race to be a statistical dead heat, with 38 percent supporting Democrat Terry McAuliffe and 37 percent supporting Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

As in past elections, there has been broader support for McAuliffe in voter-rich Northern Virginia where he polled 45 percent compared to Cuccinelli’s 41 percent.

The same poll looks ahead to the 2014 U.S. Senate race when Sen. Mark Warner is up for re-election. It shows Warner, who has already indicated he will seek re- election, getting 51 percent compared to his potential rival, current Gov. Bob McDonnell, garnering 35 percent.

The poll was conducted between March 20 and March 24 and has a margin of error of 3.5 percent.
