Study: Electronic medical records need more security, privacy protections

Sunday - 1/12/2014, 3:41pm  ET

WASHINGTON - More and more medical records are being moved online and electronic health records have plenty of benefits - but there's a risk for fraud and security breaches, according to a new report from the Office of the Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The report focused on the potential for fraud, but other people, such as Dr. Art Caplan, director of the Medical Ethics division at New York University Medical Center, are concerned about privacy.

Electronic medical records should have layers of protection built in like credit and banking systems do, Caplan says.
