The trunk of a fallen tree, translated into artwork

WASHINGTON – One storm’s debris is another man’s art supplies.

InsideNoVa reports that Joe King, a man from Pennsylvania, is carving the trunk from a fallen tree into a piece of art.

The tree, a 107-foot white oak called the Four Seasons Liberty Oak, was downed by the June derecho. Its trunk lies near the clubhouse in the Four Seasons, a community in Montclair for people over 55 years old.

The tree was believed to have been the oldest of its kind in the county, holding a spot on the county’s champion tree registry. King, who has done similar work across the country, was hired to use the tree trunk as material for an osprey carving.

King began working on the tree trunk Monday.
