Woman charged with DUI in crash that injured children, officer

WASHINGTON – A 26-year-old woman has been charged with driving under the influence in connection with a crash that injured two children and a Fairfax County police officer Monday night.

Police say an officer was making a traffic stop on Interstate 66 near Monument Drive when his cruiser was hit by a 1993 Chevrolet at about 10:15 p.m. The collision then caused the officer’s cruiser to hit the vehicle he had stopped, a Toyota, police say.

The officer saw “the vehicle in front of him commit a traffic violation. He puts on his emergency equipment and is attempting to pull that car to the right,” says Officer Don Gotthardt, Fairfax County police spokesman. “While that takes place, the cruiser is struck from the rear. That impact causes the cruiser to rear-end the car he was attempting to stop.”

A 6-year-old boy riding in the vehicle that struck the police cruiser suffered injuries that initially were described as life-threatening. Police say his condition has improved and his injuries now are not life-threatening.

Police say Dianna Holloway was driving the vehicle that hit the cruiser. She is facing a DUI charge.

Holloway, the officer and another child who was with Holloway — a 1-year-old boy — all had injuries that were not life-threatening.

The driver of the Toyota, which initially had been pulled over by the officer, was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. A passenger in the Toyota was not treated.
