WASHINGTON -- Comic and D.C.-area native Lewis Black brings his signature comedy style to the Warner Theatre this weekend.

Black performs Friday and Saturday at the Warner Theatre.

Black's trademark manic style and political rants have been a fixture on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," which has bolstered his fan base over the years.

Similar to a well-arranged piece of music, the true appeal of Black's work lies in the sum of its parts.

"You don't get as angry as I do unless you're an optimist," Black said to WTOP in an interview. "I went to drama school as a playwright. I stole a lot from my friends who act, and learned a lot from them."

His acting background has resulted in several on-screen roles over the years, including the "voice of anger in a 12-year-old girl" in the upcoming Pixar film, "Inside Out," which also features fellow comedians Amy Poehler and Bill Hader.

The political aspect of Black's comedy stems back to his upbringing in Silver Spring, Md.

"There's a sense of idealism about it, partly because the buildings give off that sense. Then as you grow older you realize, 'Oh, there are people in those buildings,' and ‘Oh, they're jacka**es,'" Black says, reflecting on growing up in the D.C. area.

Black says he was living in D.C. during an extraordinary time.

"Things got done. Why did they get done? Because the leadership at that point was drinking, and I fully believe that," Black says, recalling the Civil Rights Movement.

Also, Black has been an advocate through a long-standing association with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He'll be hosting a one-night-only fundraising event for the CFF on May 5 in New York City.

Mr. Black's comedy isn't strictly political. Watch him ruminate on the perils of using a smartphone below.
