WASHINGTON - Academy Award-winning documentary filmmakers Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine are back with a new documentary about a rare disease and its impact on 17-year-old Sam Berns and his family.

After being diagnosed with progeria, a disease that prematurely ages the body, the Berns family set out on a mission to find a cure for their son and other children affected by the disease.

"His parents were told there is no treatment, no cure, but they're doctors, and just the kind of people they are, they decided to put everything into trying to find a treatment and cure for their son," says Andrea Nix Fine, who won the 2013 Oscar with her husband for their film, "Inocente."

She and her husband, both of Chevy Chase, stopped by WTOP to discuss their three-year journey following the Berns family, who established The Progeria Research Foundation shortly after Sam's diagnosis.

"It was incredibly powerful how positive this family remains They are not in denial about what's happening with the medical situation or how quickly these children are having to find something to try to save them, but they have one of the most optimistic, positive attitudes," says Andrea Nix Fine.

"Life According to Sam" was scheduled to air Monday, Oct. 21, on HBO at 9 p.m. See the trailer below.
