What you need to know about local leaf collection

WASHINGTON — Autumn leaves are starting to pile up, and in some parts of the region, there are strict rules about how to get rid of them.

Prince George’s County no longer accepts leaves in plastic bags. You have to put them in paper yard waste bags or in marked trash cans for pickup.

Montgomery County won’t collect leaves in plastic bags, either.

The City of Manassas has a similar rule: A first offense will get you a warning, a second offense is a $75 fine, and a third offense will cost you $150.

Many local cities and counties have leaf vacuuming programs that allow you to rake or blow your leaves to the curb for pickup.

Be sure to keep those leaves out of the street and drainage areas.

Howard County has a so-called “Rake and Take” program that matches people who have piles of unwanted leaves, with others who want them for compost.

Here’s a full list of local leaf collection programs.
