WASHINGTON — Because of new information, the National Park Service is asking people to continue avoiding parts of C&O Canal after last week’s sewer overflow.
The NPS says the overflow happened after storms caused untreated waste water to spill into the C&O Canal in Georgetown.
The area people should stay away from is below Lock 6 near Sycamore Island.
The park service is advising anyone who uses the canal below Lock 6 to sanitize equipment that comes into contact with the water through midday Sunday. People are also advised not to fish in the canal below Lock 6 or go into the water during that time.
The overflow was confirmed Friday evening.
An earlier sewage spill led to the closure of the Capital Crescent Trail between Fletcher’s Cove and Water Street in Georgetown. The trail is expected to remain closed for as long as several weeks.
