Weekend Wakeup Call - Friday, April 13 to Monday, April 16

Metro remains on spring break from weekend track work through next Friday, so you can expect another weekend of relatively smooth Metro travel. The Cherry Blossom Festival continues with a parade and street festival on Saturday. There will be several MS awareness walks throughout the area. And, the Emancipation Day Parade is scheduled for Monday.

In construction news, there will be daytime lane closures on U.S. 50 and New York Avenue, overnight lane closures on the Dulles Toll Road and a full closure of Interstate 95 High Occupancy Vehicle lanes in Virginia.

Read on for the details, and have a great weekend.

Cherry Blossom Festival

The Cherry Blossom Parade is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. - The following closures will be in place:

  • The parade will run on Constitution Avenue NW between 7th and 17th Streets.
  • No traffic will be able to cross the parade route between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
  • All westbound traffic will be stopped at the Pennsylvania Avenue/Constitution Avenue crossover.
  • All eastbound traffic will stop at 17th Street NW.
  • There will be no access to 14th Street or 12th Street from the Southeast-Southwest Freeway.

Sakura Matsuri Street Festival

After the Cherry Blossom Parade on Saturday, the Sakura Matsuri Street Festival will feature music, food, arts and culture from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

New York Avenue construction update

The The New York Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project continues this weekend, with daytime lane closures. Here's what you need to know:

  • Work is scheduled for Saturday between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Only one lane will be open in both directions between Florida Avenue and 4th Street NE.
This is a rare daytime closure, so expect delays if you're headed from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and U.S. 50 toward the 3rd Street Tunnel and Downtown.

Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project

On Sunday night, lane closures for the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project will be in place while crews finish a flyover bridge that crosses both the Dulles Toll Road and Route 7:

  • Three right lanes will be blocked eastbound Dulles Toll Road/Route 267 at Route 7.
  • The ramp from eastbound Route 7 to eastbound Dulles Toll Road/Route 267 will be closed.

Walk MS 2012

The National MS Society sponsors several Ma href="http://walkdcw.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=WLK_DCW_homepage">MS awareness walks this weekend. Walks are scheduled for Saturday in Bowie, Manassas, Rockville and Waldorf. Walkers will be in Reston on Sunday, and in the District next Saturday, April 21.

Emancipation Day

Emancipation Day is Monday, and the D.C. Department of Transportation wants everyone to know it will enforce regular rush hour restrictions. Emancipation Day is a legal holiday in the District, but federal government offices will be open. Typical weekday reversible lane operations will occur on the following roadways:

  • Connecticut Avenue, NW between Legation Street and Woodley Road
  • 16th Street, NW between Arkansas Avenue and Irving Street
  • Canal Road between Chain Bridge and Foxhall Road
  • Independence Avenue between 4th Street, SW and 2nd Street, SE

The Emancipation Parade will line up at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 3rd Street NW around 9:30 a.m., and the Emancipation Day Street Festival will kick off around 11 a.m. Monday at Freedom Plaza.

U.S. 50 lane closures

There will be some daytime construction on U.S. 50/John Hanson Highway on Saturday, as crews work on a $3.8 million safety and resurfacing project between the District line and Columbia Park Road in Cheverly. On Saturday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., expect a single lane to be blocked in both directions.

I-95 HOV construction

On Friday night between 11 p.m. and 10 a.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation will close the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes on Interstate 95 between Franconia Road/Exit 169 and Dumfries Road/Exit 152. Crews will be performing survey work related to the I-95 Express Lanes project.
