KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — In a story published Feb. 27, 2026, The Associated Press reported on United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urging Eritrea and Ethiopia to respect a border treaty signed 25 years ago. The story needed context for the reference to the treaty. The treaty, also known as the Algiers Agreement, was a peace treaty signed in 2000 that formally ended the border conflict between the two countries and created mechanisms for demarcating their common border.
