Fireball throws a scare into Bangkok (Video)

WASHINGTON — It looks like something out of a Michael Bay movie, but it was a real fireball that came crashing to Earth on Monday morning in Bangkok, Thailand.

The sight threw a fright into a lot of people in and around the city, some of whom reported it as a plane crash. More than 100 rescue workers and firefighters were sent to search for wreckage.

A Thai astronomer told the Thai news agency Khaosod that the fireball was “in fact the train of smoke of a meteor. The public need not be concerned. This is a normal phenomenon.”

Phil Plait, a former Hubble Space Telescope scientist, told the German news agency dpa that “It was almost certainly a good-sized rock burning up in our atmosphere.”

Whatever it was, it was a little CGI brought to life. You can fast-forward to 0:27 if you want, but it’s better not to expect it:
