WASHINGTON — The Nationals are expected to call up outfielder Juan Soto from Double-A Harrisburg, according to multiple reports.
The 19-year-old is the team’s No. 2 prospect and the 15th best prospect in all of baseball as rated by MLB Pipeline on MLB.com.
He is expected to join the team on Sunday for the series finale against the Dodgers.
This will be Soto’s third promotion in 2018. He started the year with the Class A Hagerstown Suns and played 16 games with them before getting called up to the Class A Advanced Potomac Nationals. He spent 15 games in the Carolina League before getting called up to Double-A.
In seven games with the Harrisburg Senators, Soto was hitting .296 with a .386 on base percentage and two homers.
A series of injuries paved the way for Soto’s call up to the majors.
Outfielders Adam Eaton and Brian Goodwin have both been placed on the disabled list and it’s unknown when they’re expected to return. Utility man Howie Kendrick was lost for the year on Saturday when he ruptured his Achilles tendon.
Victor Robles, who is the Nats’ No. 1 prospect and appeared in 13 games in the majors last year, is also on the disabled list.
At 19-years-old, Soto will be the first teenager to appear for the Nats since Bryce Harper in 2012. Soto will also be the youngest player on an active roster in the majors.
