Outside the arena, Caps fans revel in Stanley Cup mania

WASHINGTON — While Washington Capitals fans jammed Capital One Arena for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, other fans are making a night of it outside.

Fans crowded 8th and G streets Northwest in front of the National Portrait Gallery, where a very large screen gave them a clear picture of the action on the ice inside the arena across the street.

“To come down here, it’s just the energy, everyone’s happy — the Jumbotron, be outside, save your thousand bucks, be out here — maybe give that money to a charity,” said Eddie Schudel, of Reston.

Next to the screen, an outdoor stage stretched out over the steps of the museum. Caps fans cheered and waved their arms as Sting and Shaggy belted out songs accompanied by guitars and drums that filled the warm night air.

“It’s already, like, insane and there are so many Caps fans here, everywhere and activities everywhere, it’s exciting, it’s really exciting” said fan Lindsey Wolf.

Capitals fans could be seen crowding the sidewalks of Chinatown and Penn Quarter. The bars and restaurants were chock-full of customers many in the red team jerseys and Capitals T-shirts.

And it’s not just fans who were out there, cheering the Caps. Celebrities Lynda Carter and Kenan Thompson also rocked the red outside the arena. And, no, they can’t say it wasn’t them because we have proof.
