WASHINGTON — Well, they called Wednesday night Rivalry Night in the NHL, and at Verizon Center, at least, they weren’t kidding.
The Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins don’t like each other very much, and the Caps beat the Pens all three times they played this season before Wednesday, so something was likely to happen. And it did.
Early on, CBS Sports reported a few Caps and a few Pens got into a scrap that was too intense for the ice to contain. Pittsburgh’s Blake Comeau grabbed Washington’s Tom Wilson and pushed him through the open door to Pittsburgh’s bench. The Caps’ Michael Latta — well, he went there: He jumped in as well, trading some haymakers with a few Pens in defense of his teammate and roommate.
The funny part of the video is when you realize how buried Wilson was — it seems like that end of the Pittsburgh bench area has been clear for a good few seconds before Wilson picks himself up and skates out.
The Pens won, 4-3.
