Man mistakenly released from jail now charged with murder

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) — A Virginia man mistakenly released from jail this summer while awaiting sentencing on charges in a 2018 home invasion has since been accused in a fatal shooting.

The Free Lance-Star reports 21-year-old Najuon D. Courtney is now charged with second-degree murder in an October slaying that happened while he was out of custody. Courtney was released from the Rappahannock Regional Jail after an apparent oversight traced back to a bond granted earlier in the home invasion case.

While out on bond, he was arrested on a firearm charge and ordered to serve three months in prison. His July 29 sentencing in the home invasion case was delayed, and he was released per the bond and expired firearms sentence. Prosecutors learned of Courtney’s release when missed his rescheduled September sentencing hearing.
