Police: Va. deputy shot suspect who opened fire on authorities

TIMBERVILLE, Va. (AP) — Authorities say a deputy in Virginia shot at a suspect who had opened fire on responding deputies.

WHSV-TV cites a release from Virginia State Police that says as Rockingham County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a disturbance at a business early Monday morning, authorities got a second call about a pickup truck ramming a home. As deputies and a Timberville police officer moved toward the truck, authorities say the 27-year-old driver shot at them, and then was shot by a deputy.

He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say the pickup driver was involved in the incident that resulted in the first call. Deputies there found a 47-year-old man shot and severe damage to the business. The victim was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Both incidents are under investigation.
