Phone scammers demand money for missed jury duty

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) _ Authorities in Virginia Beach are investigating dozens of reports that involve a jury duty scam.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/2d0RcaU) that scam artists have called several people in Virginia Beach and demanded a fee for missing jury duty.

The most recent space of calls involved fraudsters who claimed to work for the Civil Process Division of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, which oversees evictions and repossessions. Or the scammers simply identify themselves as a “Lt. Miller,” although no one with that name works there.

The fraudsters demanded anywhere from $900 to $6,000 and asked that the money be sent to prepaid credit cards.
