WASHINGTON – Six people are dead after a small plane crashed near Shannon Airport in Spotsylvania County on Friday, Virginia State police said Friday.
The victims were: pilot William C. Hamerstadt, 64, of Indiana; Robert D. Ross, 73, of Kentucky; Lisa K. Borenstein, 52, of Indiana; Luke J. Borenstein, 19, of Indiana; Emma R. Borenstein, of Indiana; and Maren Timmerman, 15, of Germany.
State police said the small plane tried to land a little before 12:30 p.m. Friday when it came to the end of the runway and tried to pull back up. The plane made it past the railroad tracks at the end of the airport, banked left, crashed into some trees and caught fire.
The small general aviation airport just outside the Fredericksburg City limits is just south of the Fredericksburg Agricultural Fairgrounds on U.S. 17 Business (Tidewater Trail). The airstrip is next to the Fredericksburg Field House.
A rider on an Amtrak train said her train was briefly stopped as firefighters responded to the crash scene.
