BEDFORD, Va. (AP) — A family member of the man charged in the 1975 slayings of two sisters who vanished from a suburban Maryland mall has pleaded no contest to a charge of felony perjury.
News outlets report that Bedford County Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Krantz said during a court Tuesday that 69-year-old Leslie Joseph Engleking Sr. has been cooperative since being accused of making false statements to investigators.
Engleking, of Alexandria, is the brother-in-law of Richard Welch, who is Lloyd Welch’s uncle. Lloyd Welch has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the disappearance of 12-year-old Sheila Lyon and 10-year-old Katherine Lyon. Richard Welch hasn’t been charged.
A grand jury charged Engelking with perjury on Aug. 7. His sentencing is scheduled for June. He faces up to 10 years in prison.
